The $20 million project received a unanimous vote by City Council members in April and will be fully built out by 2023, with the first homes connected to lit fiber in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the machinery fired up and work began, Pleasant Grove became\nUTOPIA Fiber\u2019s 16<sup>th<\/sup> city with fiber-to-the-home services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big day for connecting America,\u201d explained Timmerman.\n\u201cAs Senator Mitt Romney and other lawmakers are working hard to finalize the\nbroadband infrastructure bill, UTOPIA Fiber crews are digging here in Utah,\nbringing ultra-fast and reliable broadband service to Pleasant Grove City.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UTOPIA Fiber is America\u2019s largest Open Access network, meaning\nthat it builds and owns the infrastructure, but allows multiple private-sector\ninternet service providers (ISPs) to compete, making it easier for them to do business\nwhile providing increased broadband access for residents. The Open Access model\nis completely net-neutral and promotes free-market competition, leading to a\nhigher-level of service and lower cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough Pleasant Grove City\u2019s 38,000 residents are technically\n\u2018served\u2019 by the cable company, community members have been complaining loudly about\nslow and unreliable internet service. That changes today,\u201d said Guy Fugal,\nMayor of Pleasant Grove. \u201cUTOPIA Fiber is here with a proven trackrecord and a loyal\ncustomer base. Most importantly, they have been consistently hitting their\nrevenue marks, which is the ultimate quality measure. We\u2019re very excited to start\nconstruction.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councilman Eric Jensen said: \u201cOne of the biggest questions we\nget as a City is, \u2018when are we going to have more options and when are we going\nto have fiber?\u2019 Today is that day!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompetition solves everything,\u201d noted Timmerman. \u201cWe\u2019re\nexcited to connect Pleasant Grove City residents, businesses, and students to\nthe fastest speeds in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pleasant\nGrove City\u2014like every UTOPIA Fiber project since 2009\u2014is on track to be funded\nand grown solely through subscriber revenue, at no cost to taxpayers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including Pleasant Grove, UTOPIA Fiber provides\nfiber-to-the-home services in 16 cities and business services in 50, connecting\ncommunities to residential speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps), and 100\nGbps for business, both the fastest speeds currently offered in the United\nStates. UTOPIA Fiber is a publicly-owned\nInterlocal Agency.
